Our program allows underserved middle school students a chance to catch up with their peers academically during the summer. As research has shown, at-risk students can fall behind academically during the summer and can be up to 2.5 years behind by the time they start middle school. We focus on JCPS schools with high numbers of free and reduced meal families and 80% of our students come from these homes.
Every day, the students have Math and Language Arts classes designed to engage students in new ways. Our program is unique in that we hire college students to be the teachers. We train, mentor, guide and help influence their teaching but give them creative license to make their classrooms work for their students. If any of the students are struggling, we have time for tutoring within the school day.
After the morning classes, programming is geared towards more creative learning. The students can choose from many different clubs, including chess, drama, science, dance, cooking, art, and more. Each summer is different since our teachers bring their various talents and lead the students in those disciplines. This past summer, our afternoons also included guests from the Louisville Science Center, Peace Education, the Food Literacy Project, St. Matthews Martial Arts, and both U of L Football and Basketball players who graciously came out to visit our school.
Our school model is unique in that it provides small classrooms, young teachers, creative learning, and lots of compassion. Summerbridge has been in the community for over 20 years and has been making a difference in the lives of the most precious resource we have.
